Anaerobic digestion is a naturally occurring process that can be used to convert organic waste into a mixture of methane gas and carbon dioxide (commonly called "biogas"). These in turn are converted to acetic acid. Finally, anaerobic methanogenic archaea convert these residual products into methane and carbon dioxide (biogas). In addition to biogas, biogas digesters also produce condensate (called "digestive liquid", which is composed of water, minerals and most of the residual carbon from raw organic materials. Digestive liquid is usually used as high-quality liquid fertilizer.
Anaerobic digesters operate in one of three temperature ranges: high temperature (120–140°F), medium temperature (95–105°F), and low temperature (60–75°F). Large-scale, centralized, commercial biogas facilities usually operate in the high temperature range. Higher heat allows the system to operate at higher efficiency, processing more organic materials in a shorter time as the bacterial activity rate increases with temperature. This increased efficiency can shorten the retention time of the digester to 3-5 days. The extra heat also increases the killing rate of unwanted pathogens. However, running the system requires more heat energy, which also requires a lot of insulation to maintain this heat. Heat can be applied through external heat exchangers or as part of a cogeneration system using excess heat from other facilities.
The efficient anaerobic digestion system utilizes a complete anaerobic digestion tank. Anaerobic digestion tanks can treat wastewater more effectively. This process allows the sewage to be treated, then returned to the land for fertilization or drying, and then pressed into agglomerates to be used as a fuel source, while the water is purified and discharged into the river. The methane produced is usually used to supply gas to a combined heat and power plant to ensure rapid repayment of capital costs.

Application of Glass-Fused-to-Steel Sewage Treatment Tanks
Bolted steel anaerobic digestion tank are utilized in many situations where industrial or agricultural operations produce a significant organic waste stream . In addition , municipal solid waste ( MSW ) landfills produce landfill gas from natural decomposition of organic material in the waste that can be captured for use as an energy source . Many MSW sites now have wells to capture biogas produced from waste decomposition . Wastewater treatment plants ( WWTPs ) can also be converted to operate anaerobically , and they can be used to produce biogas from a variety of wastes .
